Yulia Efimova says Rio felt like 'war'

Rio won’t bring back fond memories for Yulia Efimova.

The double silver medalist, dragged into a feud with U.S. star Lilly King and relentlessly jeered by spectators who also disagreed with her reinstatement after a doping violation, told BBC Sport that Rio 2016 felt like “war.”

“It was really crazy,” she said. “Usually when you come to a competition, it’s always (about) having fun, (meeting) people from different countries, and with some friends.

“My dad always taught me that competition was like (a) holiday. Because it’s always positive. You compete. It’s really nice. But this one was really awful.”

Efimova tested positive for melodonium in March, and was subsequently suspended by the IOC. But swimming’s governing body overturned the ruling because they couldn’t determine without uncertainty that Efimova used the illegal substance this year, or when it was officially banned.
