Madison Bumgarner put his team in a hole with his arm Thursday night, and then dug them out with his bat.

After the San Francisco Giants starter surrendered a grand slam to New York Mets outfielder Justin Ruggiano in the top of the fourth inning, Bumgarner wasted no time making amends.

The Giants responded quickly by plating three runs in the bottom of the fourth off Jacob deGrom before Bumgarner helped his own cause by slamming a 379-foot, two-run home run over the left-field wall to give San Francisco a 5-4 lead.

The blast gave Bumgarner three homers on the season and 14 for his career – the most among active pitchers. He’s also the third pitcher to hit at least three home runs in three straight seasons since Earl Wilson from 1964-68, according to

DeGrom is the fourth All-Star pitcher Bumgarner has homered off. He’s also taken Jeff Locke, Zack Greinke, and Clayton Kershaw (twice) deep.
