Warriors' Thompson will approach gold-medal game like it's Game 7

Look away, Golden State Warriors fans.

Klay Thompson scored 22 points on Friday to push the United States into the gold-medal game, but in his excitement, the American sharpshooter had a slip of the tongue.

“Well it’s a Game 7,” Thompson told NBC broadcaster Ros Gold-Onwude in the post-game interview after dispatching Spain in the semifinals.

Thompson’s point is obvious: much like a deciding Game 7 in the NBA, Sunday’s gold-medal game will be a winner-take-all scenario.

Of course, any allusions to Game 7 by a member of the Warriors immediately invokes memories of the final game of the 2015-16 season. That contest saw the Cleveland Cavaliers complete a 3-1 series comeback against the Warriors to snatch their first title in franchise history.

If anyone should be treating Sunday’s match like a Game 7, it’s Kyrie Irving, who famously drilled “The Shot” that still gives Draymond Green flashbacks.

Thompson would be better off making allusions to Game 6 of the Western Conference Finals, when he went off for 11 threes to fend off the Oklahoma City Thunder.
