Clayton Kershaw could be on the verge of returning to the rotation, though the left-hander has one more important hurdle to pass.

The Los Angeles Dodgers ace will throw a simulated game against Single-A hitters on Tuesday at Dodger Stadium. Manager Dave Roberts said the team will make a decision on its next move once Kershaw finishes, but said it’s “plausible” that he could be activated this week should things go well.

“Kersh is still on track,” Roberts told reporters Monday. “We’re encouraged, so we’ll see what happens after that.”

Sidelined since June with a back injury, Kershaw encountered a setback with his rehab in mid-July but hasn’t run into any roadblocks since. He completed a bullpen session Aug. 20 and said that he feels “100 percent.”

Kershaw was enjoying another Cy Young-caliber year prior to going down with the injury. In 16 starts, he’s 11-2 with a 1.79 ERA, 0.73 WHIP, and 145 strikeouts in 121 innings.
