Flamengo is reportedly interested in signing a footballer who was described as a star until moving to Europe.

According to Globo Esporte’s Raphael Zarko, Flamengo is maintaining negotiations for Marlos Moreno and is nearing its first reinforcement of the transfer window. Paulo Cesar Carpegiani replaced Reinaldo Rueda as manager of the Mengao on Monday, and the club is trying to finalise a loan for the Colombian youngster. Negotiations apparently advanced in recent days.

Moreno was identified by Rueda, who used the frontman on the left flank and in a central role at Atletico Nacional. Manchester City signed the footballer from Los Verdolagas for a reported transfer fee of £4.75 million in 2016, as he inked a five-year deal and went on loan to RC Deportivo La Coruna. He didn’t tally a single goal for the Galician club and joined Girona on loan in August.

At Girona, Moreno holds just two appearances to his name, both of which as a substitute. Expectations are far lower than they were two years ago, when Tim Vickery referred to him as “probably the most exciting talent thrown up by South American football last year,” pointing to his blistering shots, choices, and ability to dribble past opponents on either side.

By joining Flamengo, Moreno would play alongside two Colombian footballers, as Orlando Berrio and Gustavo Cuellar are employed by the Mengao.
