Redskins' Gruden: I fully expect Doctson ready by Week 1

Washington Redskins first-round receiver Josh Doctson‘s Achilles injury is taking longer than expected to heal, but head coach Jay Gruden still expects to see him on the field in Week 1.

Doctson expected a two-week recovery time after being put in a walking boot in early August, but took until Tuesday to resume on-field work.

“He did the route tree today, which is very positive – not 100 percent yet, obviously,” Gruden told his team’s website. “He’s not running full-speed but he’s doing a lot more now than he did a week ago, which the progress that we see is a very, very good sign for us.

“I have total expectation that he’s going to be ready Week 1, possibly the fourth preseason game, but we’ll still see. Like I said, it’s a new injury to me.”

Gruden said Doctson has been a full participant in meetings and has been taking “mental reps” while watching from the sideline. The 2016 22nd-overall pick has been dealing with the injury since spring workouts.

The Redskins are scheduled to begin their season against the Pittsburgh Steelers with hopes Doctson will be in the lineup.
