Barkevious Mingo is getting a fresh start in New England.

After losing two key edge-defenders in training camp, the Patriots have acquired the young pass-rusher in a trade with the Cleveland Browns, as first reported by Adam Schefter of ESPN.

The two sides later confirmed the deal while adding that New England will part with a 2017 fifth-round pick in exchange for the 25-year-old’s services.

Mingo, drafted No. 6 overall in 2013, was unable to live up to expectations over his three-year stint in Cleveland. Despite suiting up for all but two games, including 16 starts, the former LSU standout managed just seven sacks.

The new leadership regime in Cleveland evidently didn’t see Mingo as a fit with the club, and New England will capitalize on his availability in another low-risk, high-reward deal.

He’ll will presumably compete for a pass-rush role opposite veteran free-agent addition Chris Long, as Rob Ninkovich and Jabaal Sheard both work their way back from injuries.

The New England pass-rush could once again be a force if Bill Belichick continues his run of success with reclamation projects, and manages to get the most out of Mingo’s raw talent.
