A misread – not unlike the many at Baltusrol.

Rory McIlroy did indeed tune in for a portion of golf’s return to the Olympics, and conceded Wednesday at The Barclays that he was inaccurate with his evaluation of the sport’s return after 112 years at Rio 2016.

“It was nice to be proven wrong,” McIlroy told ESPN’s Jason Sobel.

McIlroy irked the golf and organizing communities with grating comments about golf’s place in the world’s preeminent athletic competition, explaining at an Open Championship presser that he’ll only watch “the stuff that matters.”

The former World No. 1 and most recognizable (active) golfer on tour right now watched Justin Rose let out a major championship roar when he won Olympic gold at the end of a compelling final-round showdown with Henrik Stenson.
