Pittsburgh Pirates outfielder Andrew McCutchen experienced an unfortunate and unexplained first during Friday’s game against the Toronto Blue Jays.

While taking his lead off second base in the top of the third inning, McCutchen began grimacing in pain and was eventually forced to leave the game with left knee soreness.

Following Pittsburgh’s 4-2 win over the Blue Jays, McCutchen said he was optimistic about his health, but was surprised with the non-contact injury.

“That was the weirdest thing ever. I really can’t explain it. Something I’ve really never felt,” McCutchen said, according to Adam Berry of “That’s weird. Never went away, then it went away. Hopefully I’ll wake up tomorrow, ready to go.”

Should the Pirates want to keep McCutchen off the artificial turf at Rogers Centre for Saturday’s game, they could use him as their designated hitter. Though, he’s confident the knee won’t be a cause for concern moving forward.

“As the night went on, I felt better. That’s a good sign,” McCutchen said. “I think I just had a weird moment, I don’t know. I feel good now. I feel fine. I’d rather play. I’d rather be on defense, rather play the whole game. We’ll see how I feel tomorrow.”
