How Portuguese hero Eder's sorry Swansea spell was rated by fans

One-hundred-and-eighty-two days before Eder catapulted Portugal to its first-ever major tournament victory, the frontman was an unused Swansea City substitute in a 3-2 FA Cup elimination to fourth-tier Oxford United.

The 29-year-old mustered just 269 minutes in the Premier League before being sent out on loan to Lille in the January transfer window, only exceeding a half of football twice.

Then, to the derision and puzzlement of the Liberty Stadium faithful, he won Euro 2016 for his homeland on Sunday.

Here’s how Eder’s sojourn in British football was rated on Swansea message boards.

When he was selected ahead of Bafetimbi Gomis in a 2-2 draw with Bournemouth:

Yankee_Jack: “Quite frankly, I’m not liking either of them, give me a fit Danny Graham any day.”

When reports surfaced that he’d be loaned to one of many touted clubs last winter:

jack247: “They want to loan him until the end of the season and then pay £5m for him? Tidy.”

monmouth: “It would be funny as f— if he started scoring like a rabbit on Viagra. Can’t see it sadly.”

herefordjack: “Admittedly he hasn’t had much of a chance, but he hasn’t impressed in the game time he’s had.”

Flashberryjack: “He’s not very good”

ChrisSCFC: “Surprised they’re after him; most of the Portuguese think he’s crap.”

Eder scores in his second match of Lille loan spell:

Clinton: “How? I don’t believe ’til I see a YouTube video.”

AnotherJohn: “Must admit this was a surprise to me – but probably more space than in the Prem.”

When he completed a permanent transfer to Lille in May:

harryomatic: “Not going to miss him to be honest, but for his sake hope he does well and is happy there.”

IanABS94: “Never was going to be a main player here; I think most were wondering why we signed him as he wasn’t very prolific or impactful elsewhere.”

notrac: “We’ve come out lucky here. Just about got our money back by the sound of it. £3.5m to £4.5m quoted.”

OptimistJack: “Eder was holding off centre-backs and winning plenty of aerial duels in highlights of his time at Lille, but he never looked capable of achieving anything similar during his time here. Appeared to me that he just wasn’t suited to the physical nature of the Premier League and if it’s true that we received close to what we paid for him then I think that’s decent business.”

When he won Euro 2016 for Portugal:

Rambler27: “Just shows what a plonker Monk was. Some of us kept calling for Eder to be given a chance but he preferred Gomis.”
