After being left out of Manchester United‘s pre-season tour of the United States, Guillermo Varela returned to his native Uruguay on Saturday by joining his first employer Penarol.

The right-back spent last season on loan at Eintracht Frankfurt, but was suspended on May 24 for getting a tattoo against club orders. As a result, the 24-year-old missed the 2-1 DFB-Pokal final loss to Borussia Dortmund days later.

Varela was one of the players signed during David Moyes’ ill-fated tenure. The Montevideo native was signed from Penarol in 2013, and his only league appearances for the club came in four outings under Louis van Gaal in the 2015-16 term. That campaign was bookended by season-long loan spells with Real Madrid Castilla and Eintracht.

He’s yet to make his senior debut for Uruguay, and will now hope to attract national team manager Oscar Tabarez’s attention by plying his trade back at 48-time Primera Division champion.

No financial details were disclosed for Varela’s transfer.
