Chargers executive blasts Bosa for rejecting offer

San Diego Chargers president of football operations John Spanos lambasted Joey Bosa for his contract holdout Wednesday after news the team had pulled its latest contract offer.

The Chargers said the offer would be their best proposal, but the No. 3 overall pick declined it, continuing a nearly unprecedented standoff.

The team described the offer in an official statement, but said it will restructure the contract proposal because Bosa missed preseason games.

Spanos continued on the offensive, ripping Bosa for rejecting a deal that would’ve made him among the highest-paid rookies this season.

“It’s absolutely asinine,” Spanos said, according to Kevin Acee of the San Diego Union-Tribune. “He would have gotten more cash in this calendar year than anyone except Carson Wentz.”

Spanos wasn’t happy with Bosa’s camp’s approach to the negotiations.

“I’m highly, highly disappointed in the path we’ve had to take,” Spanos said. “It’s so overly clear we had no choice. It would have been more difficult if I felt they were being reasonable. But when you’re dealing with someone who isn’t reasonable, it makes it easy.”

The executive wouldn’t specify what the next offer to Bosa would include, but said, “The deal is not going to improve as time goes on. …

“A player, especially a rookie, who misses all of the preseason games, he’s not going to be able to contribute the (same) way as a player who was present the entire time and participating. So why give the same offer to someone who missed all of the preseason?”
