Yoenis Cespedes wants everyone to know his decision to play golf while nursing a quadriceps injury did not make the situation worse.

“I just want to make it really clear that I don’t believe golf affected me,” Cespedes told Mike Puma of the New York Post.

“The doctor actually said golf did not affect me.”

The 30-year-old Mets outfielder, who was activated from the 15-day disabled list on Friday, was the subject of some controversy after deciding to play golf a day before he was put on DL on Aug. 3rd. Mets general manager Sandy Alderson said at the time that the organization should have handled his injury better.

“It’s been a trying month or so with Yoenis and the injury and in retrospect it’s probable that we should have just put him on the DL at the beginning of this episode,” Alderson explained.

“He wanted to try and play through it and we certainly had every interest in seeing him do that.”

Before his injury he was one of the Mets’ most consistent offensive contributors, hitting .289/.362/.568 on the season.
