Arsenal has no intention of allowing Germany’s under-23 star Serge Gnabry to leave the club, with manager Arsene Wenger eager to offer the midfielder a new contract.

Gnabry has led his country to the final in men’s football at Rio 2016, impressing onlookers with six goals in the tournament. Hertha Berlin manager Pal Dardai admitted recently that “Serge meets our search parameters,” adding that he would like to take the Arsenal youngster on a season-long loan.

Gnabry spent the first half of the 2015-16 campaign with West Brom, but cut short his temporary stay in the West Midlands once first-time opportunities became limited.

Now Wenger wants to reaffirm his trust in the 21-year-old with fresh terms. Gnabry’s current deal runs until June 2017.

“I want to keep Serge and to extend his contract. We stood by him for a long time,” the Frenchman told reporters Thursday. “He went to West Brom and didn’t get a game, and we had to rebuild his confidence when he came back.

“I allowed him to go to Rio without playing for us at all, to get him back to competition and help Germany. He has been here for a long time and it is important for him to stay with us.”

Gnabry joined Arsenal’s academy in 2011 and has since made 10 Premier League appearances with the Gunners.

He will likely start for Germany in Saturday’s showpiece against host nation Brazil.
